Cricket has quite the history in Africa with the sport being introduced to the continent mostly in the Colonial period. Cricket isn’t as popular in Africa as it is in other parts of the world, such as Australia, India and England, however the game has grown in popularity even amongst African bookmakers. A number of African countries where cricket is played professionally include Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Namibia.

    Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has had a few successes on the international stage with the team qualifying for several World Cups and producing players such as Andy Flower, Brandon Taylor and Heath Streak. The development of the sport has been affected by the country’s political and economic instability over the years.

    South Africa

South Africa is one of the top cricketing nations in the world and has produced some of the greatest players such as AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla. South Africa also has a franchise-based Mzansi Super League which is one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world.

    Kenya

Cricket has a growing following in Kenya. The national team has qualified for several World Cups and the country has produced great players such as Steve Tikolo and Collins Obuya.  The launch of the East African Premier League (EAPL) is aimed at promoting T20 cricket in the region, a shorter form of the game.

    Namibia

Namibia is a relatively small cricketing nation, but recently the sport has grown in popularity. The national team has qualified for the T20 World Cup and the country has hosted several international cricket tournaments.

What makes cricket popular in these countries and not other African countries?

The popularity of cricket in these countries can be attributed to the following factors:

    Colonial legacy

Cricket was introduced to the African continent during the colonial period when these Nations were under British rule. This has, therefore, made cricket a part of the cultural heritage of these nations and many people continue to enjoy and play the sport.

    International success

Countries like Zimbabwe and South Africa have had success on the international cricket stage. This has created a lot of interest in the game and is attributed to its success in these countries.

    Development programs

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has had several programs to promote the sport. They have provided resources and training to younger players and these have helped to develop the skill in these countries.

While cricket may not be as popular as other sports in the region, it still has a dedicated following and plays an important role in the sporting culture of many African nations.
