Love animals and have always dreamed of working in a setting surrounded by them? Are you empathetic and truly care for animals? Veterinary science education will be a great fit for you.

Researching for a guide to vet school prerequisites and requirements? Then, look no more. In this article we discuss all the vet school requirements important for the selection process.

    1. Complete your undergraduate course prerequisites

Even though it is not mandatory to finish your undergraduate degree in order to apply to vet school, it is highly recommended that you should. Most schools prefer applicants who fulfill all the academic prerequisites.

Most students want to know what kind of programs they should choose for a career ahead in veterinary medicine. Although it’s up to you, the recommended programs would be biological sciences, animal science, or biomedical science etc. And no matter what undergraduate degree you pursue, do not stay behind on your core science knowledge. Take math classes if needed to work on that. Vet school admission committees take a close look at the courses while evaluating applications.

    1. Take the Standardized tests

Vet schools require standardized tests as a prerequisite to application. They accept the GRE while some schools also accept a MCAT – Medical College Admission Test or VCAT – a Veterinary College Admission Test. Each school has their own benchmark of expectations for GRE scores. But always try to score the best you can. Do your GRE practice tests, study in advance and be prepared to impress these admission boards with your excellent efforts and achievements.

    1. Experience with animals

As a vet school applicant, having some experience with animals in a clinical set up is fundamental to your application, so make sure that you do the needful. What admission committees are looking for is an applicant who showcases their passions and follows it by volunteering, internships or joining relevant clubs. They mean it, so they are actively taking initiative. It also provides the student a chance to realize if this is really the field they want to pursue and get to understand how animals are provided medical care during emergencies, in different situations, suffering from different conditions etc- which are crucial to see for any student who aspires to be a veterinarian one day.

    1. Good letters of recommendation

Besides your application letter and a statement of purpose, you’ll also need to submit recommendations as a part of your application. Recommendation letters vouch for your experience and abilities. Seek recommendation letters from professionals you’ve internships , a doctor you shadowed, volunteering certificates etc. everything will count to gauge your ability. Try to discuss the possibility of getting a recommendation earlier and not too late.

Now that you have a fair idea of what all you need to become a vet, it will help you prepare better before you apply for vet schools. Enroll yourself in a program when you are ready.
